Spirited Away
Was a good film. I asked on irc today what someone would do if they fell out of a plane at 15000 feet. Would they pray for a miracle? One response that I received was that they would go out with a 10 point dive. Would they pray for a miracle? No. Why would anyone want to waste a miracle on them? There are better people to save.
This is an odd answer, because the answer I thought I would get is “I don’t believe in miracles.” Who is the judge of personal importance? Is saving lives important? Is writing code important? Of course there are no real answers for these questions, thats what makes them intriguing (and the reasoning behind this new blog category).
I used to be that selfless, I think. But now it seems I have some sketchy goals in life and to die now falling from a 15000 foot height; I think I would pray for a miracle. It doesn’t matter to whom (if anyone). Now of course this is all conjecture anyway. If I were to put two people in a room and simply say, one of you has to die, decide who it will be; the process would probably be quite difficult. It’s simple to be selfless on paper, but less so in practice. Can you stare someone in the eye and tell them they must die so that you can live?

If you liked Spirited Away, you might want to watch some of Miyazaki’s other good films: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind; Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke.
